Jesus, My Breath and my Life
I'm just back from nine o’clock Mass and I have another little verse that I made up, Jesus, to tell you I love you. See how childish I can be sometimes. Anyhow it says what I want to say to you this morning.
I went to church, to start my day.
(I doubt I’d find a better way).
I settled down there in the pew,
Dear holy Lord, so close to you.
My hands reached out, inviting thee;
In bread and wine you came to me.
Your heart was beating in that wine;
Now it’s beating close to mine.
You're resting, cradled in my breast;
Because in you my heart finds rest.
I hugged myself to hold you in.
I slammed my door on hate and sin.
I give my love and God gave me His.
My very breath and life He is.
No greater pleasure will I know
This day, as on towards night I go.
